From October to February members of Conversation Club joined Leeds City Council (LCC) Countryside Rangers as volunteers to help with dead-hedging, woodland maintenance and tree-planting. In all, around 30 members were involved. The sessions were led by LCC Countryside Rangers and lasted a half or full day. Sites included Breary Marsh, Tarnfield Park Yeadon, Otley Quarry, Bramley Park and Meanwood Park.
The sessions were hard physical work, sometimes in very cold weather, but by the end of the sessions we all felt a sense of contribution to environmental improvement including supporting the LCC Woodland Creation project. Members were able to mix with and talk to other volunteers from the wider Leeds community, all working together for a common purpose, whilst seeing parts of Leeds that they would not otherwise have visited.
We are grateful to a number of LCC Councillors for funds for winter outings which were used for lunches and travel costs.
