ESOL means English for Speakers of Other Languages

ESOL is lessons in basic English in the UK for people who have a different mother-language. Someone’s ESOL level gives teachers and employers a good idea of how well they can speak English.

ESOL classes in the UK are provided by:

  • Public colleges, eg Leeds City College
  • Private language schools
  • Charities, e.g RETAS, PATH

There are 4 skills needed to learn any language, including English:

  1. Listening
  2. Writing
  3. Reading
  4. Speaking

ESOL students also need to learn:

  • Grammar – the rules of English
  • Vocabulary – the meaning of different words
  • Pronunciation – how to say words and sentences correctly
