In the midwinter break when we could not hold our normal weekly meetings for our guests, we had a day out in Selby. We took the train to Selby, arriving mid-morning. After visiting the old toll bridge we walked near the river, canal and lock and volunteers explained the industrial history of Selby, related to the river and the surrounding agricultural land. At the old shipbuilding yard we looked at YouTube videos of ships being launched into the river, which were new to many of us.
In the afternoon two of the Abbey’s volunteers kindly gave us a guided tour. The size and beauty of the Abbey, especially the stained-glass windows, impressed all of us. When we came outside, with the sun shining on the stonework, it was a sight to remember.
We repeated the visit a month later so that more of our guests could enjoy the day out.
This trip was made possible using funds from Leeds Community Foundation.
